It is always a good sign when large corporations get on the bandwagon.In this case, the sustainable development bandwagon.

There are currently two very different strategies taken large corporations in their drive towards sustainable development:

• A “sustainable brand” strategy: Clorox and S.C. Johnson have both chosen to create a “green” cleaning range.

• A “transversal” strategy: Procter & Gamble targets all mainstream consumers. The company gradually reinforces the “green” dimension of most of its flagship brands. It created “Tide Coldwater”, an “Ultra Downy” softener.

The Abu Dhabi urban planning council asked helped from the city of Vancouver to help elaborate their their sustainable urban design.  Vancouver’s  co-director of planning, is serving as the emirate’s “special adviser.

The city of Abu Dhabi has requirements that are quite different, mostly heat and drought related.

A large corporation like Home Depot only adopted sustainable development measures following a public outcry and boycotts over the sale of their lumber products. Seeing a threat to their profits, they adopted more ecological and sustainable business practice in order to impove their public image.

But, in order for corporations to change their ways, it has to hurt on their bottom line and that only occurs when an informed public becomes aware of a situation that needs to be corrected.  Hence the need for a better educated general public.

Other large corporations like Wal Mart have also been made aware of certain of their business practices that needed improvement. Those two large retail chains require their suppliers to also improve their ways. For example, Wal Mart has asked their suppliers to provide less packaging so that there are less garbage generated by all the wrappings.

Educating the public can start in public schools from kinder garden on up but also through various means to educate the adult population as well.

In a recent visit to China and South Korea, Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, of course discussed many topics. One topic was Canadian beef import to South Korea. Following the mad cow disease situation, South Korea has banned the import of Canadian beef for past six years.

Currently, Asia has the best longevity record and very few Asians are overweight and have all of the major health issues faced by Americans, such as high cholesterol and heart problems. This is due to their diet which uses very little beef, some pork, and chicken, but mostly seafood as its major source of proteins.

In total, according to the food and agriculture organization, North Americans get 7.6% of their proteins from meat versus 3.7% for Asians. North American diet consists of 1.5% fish versus 2.8% for Asian diet. North American diet has only 11% of fruits and vegetables compared to 29% for Asian diet.

And we want to send them more beef so that they too can be overweight, have high cholesterol, heart disease, and a shorter lifespan.

By being just a little smarter and with just a bit more foresight, it could be advantage of Third World.

Third World nations feel that first world nations had it good for 200 years and that it gave them an advantage that they are now denied.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite. By not having spent all that money on decaying infrastructures and clinging on to old models, Third World nations can build far more efficient infrastructures. They can build efficient clean renewable energy systems, not having to worry about the fate of their existing grids. They can build and expand new and existing cities using the state-of-the-art in LEED compliant technologies. They can have far more efficient ways of moving people and freight around. Benefiting from all that you stuff they could become way he more productive than first world nations. First world nations could in fact become dinosaurs in the new knowledge and creative economy which will drive the 21st century. Advantage: Third World nations.

An interesting article on the architecture 2030 website about energy consumption as it relates to buildings. The article shows three pie charts with the first two showing U.S. energy consumption and the third one showing worldwide energy consumption. Surprisingly, it shows that transportation only accounts for 1% of energy consumption and buildings for 76%.  That energy comes from electricity produced from oil or gas. Sometimes the heating uses oil or gas directly. But in both cases, oil or gas is used. Energy requirements are for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) as well as lighting, elevators, security systems and all other systems using electricity. The charts include energy required for construction, renovation and maintenance of the buildings.

Most of that energy requirement could be reduced by having more intelligent HVAC systems, better insulation and heat management. But most importantly, large buildings could incorporate energy producing features such as harnessing wind and solar energy as well as geothermal energy.

According to the Conservatives, the Liberals have an agenda:  They want to rule the world.  Here are the facts: 

Al Gore owns 100% of 100% of all the green companies in the world, on top of donating money to all those non-profit organizations who own large pieces of land that they keep unspoiled, forcing us to save the ecosystem instead of being able to exploit the land for coal, natural gas, oil, or to cover the land with concrete and asphalt for parking lots, car manufacturing plants, or mega surface stores.

 Natural resources are limitless, God says so!  It’s written in the Bible, not exactly like that but, we conservatives can make the Bible say anything we want, after all we are spin experts.

 All of our natural resources should be exploited in order to keep our manufacturing sectors alive, since it controls the economy.  8% of total jobs in the U.S. are from this sector, so of course that 8% controls the economy, and not the 40% + jobs in the service sector.

 It is impossible to have a strong sustainable economy with green sustainable companies.   It absolutely has to be oil.  After all, the great world civilizations’ economy,  Egypt, Greece, Rome, and China, were based on oil.

 Pollution is good.  God says so in the Bible.  As Conservatives, we must vanquish those Liberals before they destroy the planet with their green economy.
